Homewares and Garden Oldwares Heaven in Tenterfield

Let’s face it. There is nothing better than spending a weekend away, visiting a quaint country town, and spending the day wandering down the main street, walking in and out of all the different homewares stores and galleries on offer in town. Tenterfield is certainly one of the best country towns in NSW to do just that. From classic antiques, to all the modern ‘must haves’, to the down right quirky- Tenterfield has a variety of different homewares stores to choose from and they are all conveniently located along the main street in town. There are also a selection of cafes to stop in along the way, and at the end of the strip of homewares stores is The Commercial Boutique Hotel with a private gallery of local artists showcasing their photography talents on the walls in the Curve Bar-and all the works are for sale. The Commercial Boutique Hotel is the perfect end to the walk, reinforcing you with great coffee, local wines and an awesome lunch to help refuel you after your homewares discovery.

The main street of Tenterfield, although it is part of the New England Highway, is a 40 km/hour zone making it perfect for guests to wander in and out of stores, easily crossing the road at the conveniently placed pedestrian crossings, and exploring each side of the street without the loud noise of fast cars passing on the highway.

There are too many homewares stores to mention in this blog, so starting from the Sydney end of the main street and walking up towards the Stanthorpe end, here are a few of my favourites-

First on my list is The Corner Life and Style Store and Cafe. This store is located in a restored heritage building and it is just beautiful inside. It has everything you could possibly want and is bound to have that perfect gift you have been searching for. Chic and contemporary collections of accessories, jewelery, fashion and small homewares all laid out in gorgeous collections. The best thing that I love about this store, is that most of the collections are organised by colour. We all gravitate towards certain colours and tend to choose our accessories based on colour schemes we like, so to have a store organised into colour trends makes it very convenient to explore. After an indulgent browse, wander through to the cafe downstairs and indulge in a housemade sweet treat and coffee to keep your energy levels up for more exploring along the main street.

Just a few stores up, is Ruben and Flax. If it’s the more classic and bigger homewares and antiques that you are after, then Ruben And Flax is the perfect store for you. With designer small furniture items, antique collectables, mirrors, lamps, baskets, linen and so much more to browse through. You are most certainly bound to find a hidden treasure for your home in this store, I certainly did!

And of course you can’t go pass the traditional quaint homewares store that we all look forward to stumbling upon in every country town. Simply Country is that store. For all the classic homewares accessory needs- candles, soaps and lotions, lace, gorgeous house-made gift baskets, and fragrance diffusers-then Simply Country is definitely worth the visit. Who does’t love beautiful smelling soaps and lotions?

It’s not just homewares along the main street, Tenterfield has a handful of very good fashion stores also along the way too. Being a small country town, the clothing stores offer only the top quality brands of clothing. If it’s fashion you are after then Sherelle Fashions will help you find the perfect outfit no matter what the season. This store has gorgeous outfits for all ages and everything a lady must have to ensure her outfit choice is maximised to it’s full potential. Stunning coats, scarves, hats, gloves and jewelery, every accessory you can think of to ensure your outfit is complete and you look sensational.

If it’s the full on classic country look you are after. Flannigans is most definitely the store to visit. From county style pants and tops to footwear and classic akubra hats. With great quality brands like Yarra Trail, R.M Williams and Marco Polo available, your class country look will certainly be found in this store. And oh my goodness the colours and patterns of the long sleeved shirts are simply gorgeous. There is something to suit everyone. Great quality leather items are available to complete the country look. They even have an assortment of whips!

And who doesn’t love plants, flowers and garden accessories? Number one on this list is definitely visiting the garden sculpture store on the main street just near Coles. You really won’t miss it as the entire front yard is covered with the most amazing garden sculptures of all sizes, and they are amazing! The main theme is farm animals and oh my goodness they are so cute!!
Second on the garden ‘must visit’list is The Potting shed and Garden shop which is located a bit further up the main street past The Commercial Boutique Hotel. Although this gorgeous store is hidden away from the main street, once you step inside you won’t be disappointed. A selection garden plants and flowers and oldwares for sale. This gorgeous place has a boutique selection of classic timeworn wares for your home and garden.

Okay, so this last one is not on the main street of town, but its well worth the visit. White Cottage is about a 10 minute walk from the main street but the walk takes you through gorgeous tree lined streets of Tenterfield and when you get to the cottage the flower garden and restored cottage is breathtakingly stunning. The cottage has a collection of garden supplies and garden antiques, seeds and plants, all of which are beautifully displayed in the light flooded rooms of this gorgeous little cottage. In my opinion the late afternoon is the perfect time to visit as the afternoon light streams through the old stained glassed windows giving the cottage a very romantic feel.
So have I convinced you yet? There are definitely homewares galore in Tenterfield, and is the perfect quaint town to visit. Book your weekend away at The Commercial Boutique Hotel and treat yourself to a homewares self discovery tour! We look forward to welcoming you here very soon.
